In this guide
Bollywood dance is popular for good reason. It is joyful, expressive and welcoming to beginners. Classes often draw people who have never danced before, as well as those who grew up with the music. To teach it well, you need a clear structure, music licensing that works and an approach that keeps the mood fun while building real skills.
Bollywood draws on classical, folk and contemporary influences, and teachers shape their own style. This plan describes a general approach.
What students usually want
- To learn a routine to a song they love.
- To have fun and be active.
- To feel confident and expressive.
- Sometimes, to prepare for a wedding, party or performance.
Check what your group wants, since the answer changes the lesson.
A 60-minute plan
| Minutes | Section | Content |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 8 | Warm-up | Upbeat, gradual build. See a dance warm-up routine |
| 8 to 20 | Basic steps | Teach three or four foundational steps and hand movements |
| 20 to 40 | Song section | Teach 32 to 48 counts of a routine in chunks |
| 40 to 50 | Expression | Facial expression, eye contact and attitude |
| 50 to 57 | Full run-through | Dance the section with the music, in groups |
| 57 to 60 | Cool-down | Slow stretches and thanks |
Teaching the steps
Foundational steps in Bollywood style vary, but many classes include simple footwork patterns, hand gestures, shoulder movements and turns. Teach each slowly with counts, then speed up. Combine two steps, then three, before adding the music.
Teaching the routine
Use the same chunking method as for any choreography: show, break down, repeat, add music, layer and run from the beginning. See teaching choreography so it sticks.
Expression and attitude
Bollywood relies on emotion. Encourage students to:
- Smile and use their faces.
- Connect with the audience or partner.
- Let the music's mood shape the movement.
- Practise in front of a mirror, then without.
Many students feel awkward at first. Start with group exercises, keep it light and model the expression yourself.
Choosing music
Select songs that suit the tempo and level. Check lyrics for age suitability and cultural context, and make sure you have the right to play the music in class. For tips on structure and licensing, see choosing music for a dance class. Consider slower versions or edited mixes for learning.
Different groups
| Group | Adjustments |
|---|---|
| Adults | Explain steps, allow fun, accept different fitness levels. See adult beginner dance class |
| Children | Shorter combinations, games, simple songs |
| Mixed ages | Teach basic and advanced options |
| Party or wedding group | Focus on one routine, with a plan for the performance |
Keep it safe
- Warm up well, since the steps can be energetic.
- Check the floor and footwear.
- Watch for knee, ankle and back strain.
- Offer low-impact options.
- Take water breaks.
- Ask about injuries before class.
One-off workshops and parties
For a single event, teach one short routine, break it into small steps and finish with a performance for the group. Send a video for later practice if your attendees agree. See a yoga workshop plan for the general approach to designing a workshop, which applies to dance too.
Respect the culture
Bollywood draws on Indian cinema and dance traditions. Teach with respect, credit sources and be open about your own training. Avoid reducing the style to a stereotype.
